Community Outreach

Bicycle advocacy is core to Durham Bike Co-op’s mission, and we’re committed to helping more people in Durham gain access to bikes. Bicycles are a source of joy, community building, and essential transportation for children and adults.

Each year, Durham Bike Co-op operates mobile repair clinics and distributes bicycles and safety equipment throughout Durham through our Community Outreach program. The co-op works with schools, homeless shelters, refugee services programs, the local housing authority, child and youth services programs, and many other organizations to make bikes available to more people across Durham.

Through Community Outreach, Durham Bike Co-op restores and distributes hundreds of youth and adult bikes every year, along with new helmets, lights, locks, and safety vests.

How do we do it?

A dedicated team of volunteers meets twice weekly to repair donated bikes and redistribute them to low-income communities in Durham. We partner with groups like Triangle Bikeworks, World Relief, Church World Service, Carolina Outreach, Families Moving Forward, Urban Ministries of Durham, Durham Housing Authority, and Welcome Baby to identify needs and bike requests.

This work is funded by grants from New Belgium Brewing, REI Co-op, the Carolina Tarwheels, and NCDOT as well as generous donations from individual contributors.

How can you support us?
  • Donate bikes and parts to the co-op.
  • Become a monthly sustainer or make a one-time cash donation. Cash donations are tax-deductible.
